Our brother Raphael Greven (GRAY-venn) was born in Heumen, Holland in 1880.  After attending the seminary in Heeswijk, he joined the Order in 1898, and was solemnly professed in 1903.

Raphael immigrated to the United States in 1904, and was appointed to teach at the college.  In 1911, he became sub-prior of the abbey. Raphael spent many hours working on his avocation: painting landscapes.  A number of his paintings graced the walls of the former abbey building.

The Montana missions were opened in 1914, and Raphael was assigned as pastor to St. Margaret in Cut Bank.  In 1929, he became pastor of St. John’s in Essexville, a position he held for 25 years.  Raphael died on Wednesday, November 23, 1955 at the age of 75.
