Our brother Ignatius Van Dyke was born in DePere in 1883. In 1898, he was the first student of Bernard Pennings who helped form what was to become St. Norbert College. Ignatius joined the Order in 1904 and was solemnly professed in 1909.

After ordination in 1910, Ignatius was an instructor at the college, disciplinarian and athletic director, and in 1919, was appointed Dean of Men.

For a short time in 1929, Ignatius was the novice master at the newly acquired novitiate in Madison , returning to the abbey in 1930.  In 1934, he was named sub-prior of the abbey.  He died on Monday, October 9th, 1944 at the age of 60.  In his memory as the first athletic director, the college gymnasium, which had been built in 1929, was named in his honor.
