Order of Premontre, Premonstratensians, Norbertines, and White Canons

R. D. Norbert J. Corley, O. Praem.

Corley
Birth: February 7, 1868

Death: September 13, 1945

House: St. Norbert Abbey

Our brother Norbert Corley was born in Castlablaney, Ireland in 1868.  He immigrated to the United States in 1889 and joined the Holy Cross congregation at Notre Dame in 1895.

After teaching as a layman at St. Norbert College in 1902, he was vested as a novice, making his solemn profession in 1907.  He was ordained that same year and while teaching at the college was the first resident chaplain at Our Lady of Charity Convent in Green Bay.

Negotiations by Abbot Pennings with the archbishop of Vancouver to take over an Italian parish resulted in Norbert’s becoming pastor of Sacred Heart there in July of 1927.  By October, he was transferred to Powell River in West Vancouver and by 1935, he was pastor in both places.

In 1938, Norbert retired to the novitiate in Madison.  His ascetic life and long hours of prayer were inspiring to the novices who considered him a living Saint.  Norbert died Thursday, Sept. 13, 1945 at the age of 77.
